How to prevent jeans from fading?
Many clothes in my house bleed color after just one wash, even after several washes. If I’m not careful, the color will stain other clothes, and I’m afraid to wash them in the washing machine with other garments for fear of staining them too. Soaking them in salt water and vinegar hasn’t helped, so it’s really frustrating. What are some good solutions?
Since jeans were introduced to my country from abroad, they have been widely loved. Regardless of the era,
jeans have always been a staple. These pants are not only fashionable and good-looking, but also durable and long-lasting,
making them a product suitable for all ages. Who doesn’t have a couple of pairs of jeans in their wardrobe?
However, while jeans have many advantages, they also have some drawbacks, such as color fading. Color fading is a common occurrence for clothing,
but jeans, compared to other garments, are more prone to fading due to the characteristics of their fabric and manufacturing process.
Jeans must undergo some basic color-preserving treatment before washing, otherwise they will fade very quickly.
Today, I’ll share some tips and tricks to easily solve the problem of color fading!
Preventing Color Fading
- Salt Water Soak
For new jeans, soak them in concentrated salt water for a day, then hand-wash them. Do not machine wash.
When washing, turn the jeans inside out, wash and dry them, fold them neatly, and put them in a laundry bag (or hand wash).
Use dish soap (general laundry detergent has a whitening effect and can also remove oil stains).
- Choose the Right Washing Products
Jeans and other newly dyed clothes contain a layer of sizing (the new clothes smell), which softens the fabric and helps set the color to prevent fading.
For jeans that aren’t too dirty, use detergent; try to avoid using laundry powder.
Generally, laundry powder contains a certain proportion of bleach, which can easily cause jeans to fade.
- Frequent washing is unnecessary.
Denim is a very durable and stain-resistant fabric. Jeans were originally designed for laborers and farmers to wear while working,
without worrying about them getting dirty easily. Therefore, they don’t need to be washed after every wear.
Just wash them when they get dirty. Over-washing jeans will actually cause them to fade and look old.
Care Methods
- Dark-colored pure cotton jeans should be washed about once every 3-5 wears or once a week.
- Light colors: white, khaki, camel, etc., depend on the degree of soiling.
- For unwashed raw denim jeans, you can wear them while they are still slightly damp after the first wash.
This will help them develop texture more quickly. For jeans that have already been de-sizing,
you can simply spray a mixture of cornstarch and water on the surface to stiffen them again.
Before putting jeans in the washing machine, it’s best to zip them up to prevent the zipper from deforming during washing and becoming difficult to wear.
